September edition of Science Spin now available

The latest edition of Science Spin, Ireland’s own science magazine edited by Tom Kennedy doesn’t have anything specific on water this issue but is well worth a look anyhow.  There is a very interesting article by Tom looking at the levels of metal contamination in Dublin soils, with As, Pb and Hg all showing surprising high concentrations in the topsoil.  This is quite surpsing given the relatively low level of industrialization. The digital version is available via this link.

Decarbonisation at UK Wastewater Utilities

An article by Mark Kowalski and Line Poinel of WRc caught my eye today. It deals with the problem of energy use at UK treatment plants. Seventy five percent of their operational carbon dioxide emissions are coming from the use of electricity via the National Grid. The industry are committed to offsetting 20% of this by 2020 by a greater use of renewables. The article is published in the autumn edition of Water and Sewerage Journal.  Link
